One of the more interesting betting races on the Kempton card is the amateur jockeys’ handicap (6.00) and there are a few reasons to think Big R can go well at an each-way price.

The son of Cotai Glory shaped like he needed his return run at Southwell last month, showing good early speed to get prominent from his wide draw before fading in the closing stages, and he wasn’t given a hard time once his chance had gone.

He finished much closer when beaten less than two lengths over this course and distance a fortnight ago, finishing seventh of eight in a blanket finish, and given how well he usually sees out the six-furlong trip, a sedate gallop certainly did not play to his strengths.

Having come down 4lb in the handicap for two runs on the all-weather this winter, he’s now 7lb lower than when runner-up at Haydock in May and the four-year-old has also gone well here before, placing over this course and distance as a juvenile.

Good amateur jockeys can be worth their weight in gold in these races and the selection gets the services of the talented Jack Nicholls, who has five wins from his 20 rides. Backing all of those would have produced a profit of £23.75 to a £1 stake and he is good value for his 5lb claim.

Top amateur rider Simon Walker won this race last year and has a big chance on Back Tomorrow, who is probably the main danger to the selection after winning last time out.

However, the veteran’s rides are often overbet in these races and there’s no doubt Back Tomorrow will be well found in the market, having won a similar event with Walker on board at Southwell last month. Big R looks like the value play against her.

Later on the card in the 7f handicap (7.00), Tea Leaf Ted seems to have turned a corner and looks like another who is capable of shedding his maiden tag.

The three-year-old showed very little in his first four starts, including his handicap bow at Brighton in October, but it was a much-improved effort when beaten less than a length at odds of 66-1 on his all-weather debut at this track last month.

He then went on to show that was no fluke with another big run over this course and distance last week, losing out by just a short head to a recent all-weather winner, and it’s possibly worth upgrading that run given he reportedly lost a shoe in the process.

It’s hard to gauge whether it’s the switch to an artificial surface, the cheekpieces worn on his last two starts or the switch to more prominent tactics that has helped him turn things around, but he’s clearly going the right way now and the form of his penultimate outing received a timely boost when the winner went in again in another handicap at Lingfield on Sunday.

With no other obvious pace on paper, and the fact not many of those drawn lower than him in stall seven have shown much early zip bar Hand Jive, who doesn’t arrive in much form, it’s possible Tea Leaf Fred will be able to dictate his own fractions on the front end.

If the son of Mayson does get an uncontested lead, he could be hard to pass, having shown a game attitude to battle back when narrowly denied last week, and when the assessor has his say, he’ll be going up 3lb in the handicap for future races.

He’s probably not one to get carried away with in a field full of unexposed three-year-olds but he has solid form claims and all of his rivals are also maidens.
