The heavy rain has taken its toll and the sole remaining race meeting on Wednesday is an eight-race all-weather evening card from Kempton.

Seven of the races are handicaps with more than eight runners, and in my most recent experience of attempting to find winners at this course there seems to be a lot of bunched finishes with the handicapper having a good hold of what he is working with.

It is also a track which places a premium on intelligent decision-making in the saddle. On my last visit to the course in September, five of the seven races were won by James Doyle, Oisin Murphy and William Buick. All three jockeys have overall strike-rates in excess of 19 per cent at the Surrey venue in the last five years.

Those three are not in action today, however, so punters have to try to be equally astute in finding an angle. For me, a horse with a suitable draw, favourable each-way terms and ideally partnered by a rider with a good record at the track are part of that process.

The only non-handicap on the card is the mile fillies' novice (5.30) where the well-bred three-year-old Arts Of War is the pick from two Roger Varian entries.

Varian is a notable 6-16 (38 per cent) in the past fortnight, has a 22 per cent strike-rate with his three-year-old runners on this course and the selection's jockey Aidan Keeley, who claims 3lb, is 9-40 (23 per cent) when riding for the yard. Arts Of War displayed fair ability when fourth and third in her two starts over 7f on heavy and Tapeta at Newmarket and Southwell in November, and she is a deserving likely favourite stepping up to a more suitable mile on this course after a small break from a low draw.

There are plenty of bookies offering four places on the Class 4 7f handicap (8.00), and Revolutionise makes the most each-way appeal on those terms. The eight-year-old is dropping in class after his respectable fourth at Chelmsford last month, is well suited to 7f on standard to slow Polytrack, is 2-6 at this time of year and features off an enticing historical mark from a fair draw.

David Probert, who takes over in the saddle, was an encouraging and profitable 23-147 (16 per cent +£75.85) with all his rides on this course in 2023. He is also 16-94 (17 per cent) when riding for Stuart Williams, the trainer of Revolutionise.

McLean House, admittedly, has a solid and progressive profile, but a draw in stall ten isn't ideal from a 4lb higher mark, and another smaller each-way speculation on Supreme King is preferred from a much kinder draw than when sixth at Southwell last month.

The four-year-old son of Kingman has dropped to a mark of 70 and won't have many better opportunities to get off the mark, having achieved a Racing Post Rating of 80 over this course and distance in novice company in October 2022.

There are also four places available if you look hard enough in the mile handicap (8.30), where Glen Heste is a speculative each-way suggestion.

The selection represents David Evans, who is 4-15 in the past fortnight, and Finley Marsh continues in the saddle after the gelding's admittedly disappointing return from a 149-day break on his handicap debut on this course last month. Marsh is 4-20 (20 per cent) when riding for Evans, and was an encouraging 6-38 (16 per cent) from all his rides on this course in 2023.

Glen Heste's most significant piece of form came when beaten 12 and a half lengths by Starlust over 6f at Newbury last July. The first, second and third from that race are now rated 107, 103 and 105, so it is certainly possible to make a case for the gelded son of Exceed And Excel being well treated off a mark of 52.

He clearly needs to leave that return to action behind, but his breeding gives hope that this step up to a mile on the all-weather are the conditions under which he is most likely to thrive. His dam is an unraced half-sister to GK Chesterton and Melicertes, both useful winners at around a mile, and his sire's progeny are 37-249 in three-year-old handicaps on this course.
