One Master did what Enable was unable to at Longchamp on Sunday when landing one of the Group 1 contests for the third time.

Like Enable, a six-year-old trained in Newmarket, One Master got up in the final strides to deny Earthlight and Safe Voyage in a frantic finish to the Prix de la Foret, which she had also won in 2018 and 2019.

For owner-breeders Roy and Gretchen Jackson of Lael Stables, who board their mares at New England Stud in Newmarket, it was a huge victory and one that went a little under the radar.

Trained at William Haggas’ Somerville Lodge, One Master has now recorded five Group successes over her career, including before Longchamp the Group 3 Oak Tree Stakes at Goodwood.

Haggas indicated after Sunday’s race that One Master is likely to run once more, either at the Breeders’ Cup at Keeneland or at Ascot on British Champions Day.

One Master is the third generation of a family that was bought into when Haggas’ wife Maureen signed for her granddam Superstar Leo for just 3,400gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 1999. Ever since, the family has been nurtured on behalf of the Jacksons by New England Stud.

One Master will join the broodmare band at New England Stud at the end of this year to begin a fourth generation of the Jacksons’ treasured family.

New England Stud manager Peter Stanley told Great British Racing International: “It wasn’t the triple Group 1-winning mare the rest of the country wanted, but it was the one we were praying for! She did it very nicely and we’re very proud of her. Roy and Gretchen are over the moon.

“Her performance today was very typical of the family: they’re tough, they’re genuine, and luckily One Master likes a bit of give in the ground. She sailed through that no problem at all.

“This was always the target and why she was kept in training. William Haggas has trained her brilliantly and called it right at every turn. She is going to retire at the end of the year, so anything else is a bonus.”

Speaking of his long-standing association with the Jacksons, Stanley added: “We’ve been very lucky to have them breeding horses with us for so many years. They’re a pleasure to deal with, charming people, and they’re very supportive. There is nobody more deserving than them.

“It’s such a wonderful story for them. They’re really incredible breeders – to have bred a Kentucky Derby winner and 2,000 Guineas winner on the same day and then follow up with a triple Group 1 Foret winner is pretty magnificent.”

Reflecting on what the future holds for the Jacksons and this very successful family, Stanley said: “One Master’s dam, Enticing, is carrying to Fastnet Rock, so there could be another One Master on the way.

“There’s also a very good full-brother foal. He looks very similar. He has tremendous bone, very mature and a great backend – a very powerful horse.

“They’ve also got a nice bunch of yearlings to go into training.”
