Outstanding racehorse and leading sire Trempolino dies aged 34
Haras du Mezeray resident was grandsire of Samcro
Haras du Mezeray's grand old servant Trempolino, winner of the 1987 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, has died at the age of 34 the operation announced on Monday.
By Sharpen Up, Trempolino was bred by Paul de Moussac's Marystead Farm out of the Listed-placed Viceregal mare Trephine. Under the care of Andre Fabre, he won Longchamp's showpiece in a career that also saw him place in the Prix Lupin, Prix du Jockey Club and the Grand Prix de Paris - all top-level events.
He began his stud career at Gainesway Farm in Kentucky before moving to Haras du Mezeray for the 2000 breeding season and he was pensioned from covering duties at the Normandy operation in 2012 at the age of 28.
Trempolino produced a host of top-class performers including dual Group 1 winner Valixir, Grosser Preis Von Baden scorer Germany, Mill Reef Stakes winner Arkadian Hero and Snow Polina, who won the Beverly D Stakes in 2000.
The aforementioned Germany made a mark as a jumps sire up until his own death at the age of 22 and he is best known as the sire of 2015 Champion Hurdle hero Faugheen.
At the Cheltenham Festival last week the Trempolino sire-line came to the fore when another of Germany's sons, Samcro confirmed all the hype around him when landing the Ballymore Novices' Hurdle.
