The late German 2,000 Guineas winner Karpino sired his first winner with the victory of Deceit in a three-year-old handicap at Limerick on Saturday for Johnny Murtagh.

A homebred by Qatar Racing, who also campaigned her ill-fated sire, Deceit is the only runner in Ireland or Britain from the handful of horses sired by the son of Cape Cross, who died just weeks into the 2018 breeding season having developed an aggressive and malignant tumour.

Karpino was bred by Gestut Fahrhof and trained by Andreas Wohler, initially for Pearl Bloodstock and then for Qatar Racing. Successful on his sole start at two, he won the Group 3 Dr Busch Memorial before his comfortable four-and-a-half-length Classic victory in the Group 2 Mehl-Mulhens Rennen.

He retired to the Cashman family's Glenview Stud in north Cork to begin his stallion career.

His dam Kahara was third in the Listed Gillies Fillies' Stakes and is a Sadler's Wells full-sister to St Leger winner and leading National Hunt sire Milan. Bred by Fittocks Stud, she is also a half-sister to the dam of last season's Group 2 Queen's Vase winner Kemari and it is the further family of the Aga Khan's Derby and Irish Derby winner and sire Kahyasi.

Deceit was bred by the Shiba Partnership and is a daughter of Shiba, a winning Rail Link half-sister to Italian Listed winner La Gommeuse out of the Listed-placed Symba's Dream. She is a Vindication half-sister to the Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap and Go For Wand Handicap winner Heritage Of Gold and the stakes winner Golden Oldie.

Fourth on her sole start at two, prior to her Limerick success Deceit was given an entry in next month's Tattersalls July Sale.
