Luck is with Loki Lads at Ascot as team secures £24k Tote Ten to Follow prize

There may have been a collective sigh of disappointment as Frankie Dettori failed to keep his Champions Day winning sequence running when Kinross succumbed to Art Power at Ascot on Saturday but there would also have been a mighty whoop in the household of Loki Lads9.

Defeat for Kinross in the Champions Sprint took away the main threat of the team being overhauled on the final day of the Tote Ten to Follow Flat competition and meant that the £24,672.60 first prize was much more likely to be going to the team out in front.

Not that the deal was sealed at that point as there were still dangers lurking in the day’s feature races, not least in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, in which the 2,000 Guineas winner Chaldean – with Dettori on top – could have upset the applecart but failed to land a blow.

Kinross, as well as Chaldean, featured in the stable of Ten to Follow runner-up Cap Juluca42, who had a decent chance of nabbing the prize with a 5-4 favourite on their side. It was not to be and, while there were plenty of surprising results on Champions Day, none made a difference to the competition’s outcome.

With Paddington failing to perform and Mostahdaf failing to appear it was left to Tahiyra among the season’s leading scorers to put points on the board. Those points numbered only 1.70, though, for her third to the French pair of Big Rock and Facteur Cheval in the QEII.

The second most popular pick in the competition after Savethelastdance, Tahiyra ends the season in tenth position in the final list of the highest-scoring horses.

Only Art Power made a dent on that top ten, earning 79.05 points for his Champions Sprint victory to sneak into overall sixth place with 101.95 points, while King Of Steel picked up 56.20 points for his memorable Champion Stakes success for Dettori.
