b g Kessaar (IRE) - Sundown (Polish Precedent)
Slowly away, in rear, no telling impression (inquiry held into running and riding; rider and Mr Clutterbuck were interviewed and shown recordings of race; vet had nothing to report; rider said that his instructions were to drop gelding out early and switch him off as he had previously been keen and not finishing his races off; he said that he was intent on getting gelding to relax and took a solid pull leaving stalls as he had not wanted to give him any chance of grabbing the bit early on; he continued by saying that a combination of the strong pace through early stages and his tactics had resulted in gelding becoming partially detached rounding first bend and arguably further back than was ideal; however gelding travelled nicely and was in a rhythm, jockey added from leaving back straight none of the backmarkers were making forward moves for him to track into the race and for this reason he had steered back down to rail approaching 2 1/2f out in order to hopefully secure an economic passage through the field; however from this point, he was reluctant to fully commit for a rails run to the inside of Split Elevens near the 2f marker as he has ridden that horse several times in the past and thought his rider would likely drop down towards the rail to make his challenge; although this did not fully materialise his mount still lost ground and momentum when eased which further left him on the back foot once in the straight; jockey said gelding took a while to find his stride and after using his whip behind the saddle on two occasions, gelding was doing his best work at the line despite only passing one horse; trainer confirmed he understood instructions to mean sitting three-quarters of the way back, maybe a touch worse and was disappointed with the fact that gelding had readily been allowed to get so far out of his ground on this occasion, something jockey acknowledged in hindsight he had potentially overdone; their explanations were noted) (op 20/1)
