Four two-year-olds it could pay to follow

May Remain, 5th, Windsor, April 10

The experience should not be lost on this colt, who found everything happening too quickly, but still shaped promisingly. Slowly away, he never picked up the bridle for Luke Morris but still managed to keep on without being a threat. He should be more streetwise next time and can improve markedly on his debut.

Bow Belles, 5th, Ripon, April 20

Not much went right for this filly on debut, as she was carried right when the stalls opened, and then had to sit behind horses for much of the race. She did well to be travelling quite nicely in behind, and was not hard pressed to finish off her race. She had to cover a fair bit of ground compared to her rivals, and granted a better passage, should have more to offer on her next couple of outings.

Spoof, 5th, Newbury, April 21

This looked a decent maiden on paper, and should provide winners. Among those should be Spoof, who made a pleasing start for Charlie Hills. Keen early, the son of Poet's Voice still had enough pace to make a move to the outside of the field with a furlong left and looked a threat. But his earlier exertions told as he ran out of steam in the final half furlong. If settling better, he should be able to improve on that effort.

Dontgiveuponbob, 5th, Doncaster April 29

Richard Fahey has made a flying start with his juveniles, and this colt could give him another winner. In a race where it paid to be up with the pace, Dontgiveuponbob was further back, and when the tempo increased he was outpaced and got shuffled back further. Once able to make a challenge down the middle he kept on nicely and did best of those from off the pace. Building on that he should be able to improve on his next couple of starts.

Trainers to note

As previously mentioned, Richard Fahey is blazing a trail through the early part of the season. He has seven two-year-old winners already in the books, and several others have run with credit. Whatever he runs in a race needs consideration.

Clive Cox's first two-year-old runner of the season fluffed his lines in the Brocklesby, but since then he is three from three, with Kick On Kick On looking a potential Royal Ascot candidate.

Although David Evans has only had one juvenile winner so far from 20 runners, he has hit the crossbar five times, and another five runners finished fourth. Evans-trained runners are notable for their toughness so will no doubt have plenty of opportunities to win, so don't be surprised if he starts firing in winners.

Sire to note

Sadly top sprinter Society Rock died last year, but his first crop of progeny are performing well, with Corinthia Knight and Rock Of Estonia already on target. Other runners have also shown up well, and his progeny is worth checking when assessing a race.
