The most stirring sight of the weekend, and a big boost for this column, was watching Top Notch wing around Sandown in the manner of a horse twice the size he actually is.

Top Notch's excellence over fences has been an unlikely story, not due to a lack of ability but more down to his diminutive stature. However, having jumped round the likes of Warwick, Ascot and Sandown this season and registering a Grade 1 victory, there can be no doubting his complete transition to fencing and that he is now a major player for the festival.

Unfortunately, Cilaos Emery rather let the side down on Sunday when beaten by Mick Jazz at Punchestown and he has now been pushed out in the betting for the Supreme Novices'. The festival opener is in a confusing state, but Cilaos Emery is now on the fringes of that particular puzzle rather than the centre of it.
