Five unmissable lots on day one of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale

With 552 lots catalogued for this year's Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, which begins its three-day run on Tuesday at 11am, there is a huge amount of research for pedigree buffs and bloodstock aficionados to get stuck into.

But even with so much strength in depth, a handful of pages stand out as being particularly exceptional. We pick out five of the most outstandingly bred offerings who will come under the hammer on day one.

Lot 1

B c American Pharoah - Sacre Coeur (Saint Ballado)
Consigned by Watership Down Stud

Proceedings look set to begin with a bang with the very first lot entering the ring armed with one of the catalogue's most eye-catching pedigrees. Bred in the US by Runnymede Farm and Catesby Clay, the colt is from the second crop of US Triple Crown hero American Pharoah and is a half-brother to the remarkable Lady Eli, whose racing career saw her land five Grade 1s on grass and claim the American Champion Female Turf Horse award in 2017.

Lady Eli continued to hit the headlines once her racing career had drawn to a close, as she topped last year's Keeneland Breeding Stock Sale when she sold to John Sikura and Hill 'N' Dale Farm for an auction-topping $4.2 million.

This colt is also a sibling to the dual Grade 3 winner Bizzy Caroline, and his pedigree received a major enhancement when his two-year-old full-sister, Princesa Caroline, made a deep impression with a winning debut for Chad Brown at Belmont Park late last month.

Lot 19

B f No Nay Never - Seeking Solace (Exceed And Excel)

Continuing the early action is a full-sister to this year's July Cup hero Ten Sovereigns. The filly is the third consecutive progeny of No Nay Never and Seeking Solace, a Darley-bred daughter of Exceed And Excel, to head through the ring at Book 1, with Charlie Gordon-Watson signing for Ten Sovereigns at 200,000gns in 2017 and MV Magnier going to 600,000gns for his sister, the once-raced Eden Quay, 12 months ago.

Lot 44

B c Dubawi - Speedy Boarding (Shamardal)
Meon Valley Stud

Dubawi boasts a notably strong hand at this year's Book 1, and among his standouts on pedigree is the first foal produced by the high-class Speedy Boarding. The daughter of Shamardal, a rising force in the broodmare sire ranks, won a brace of French Group 1s in 2016, with Freddy Tylicki carrying the familiar black and white silks of Helena Springfield to success in the Prix Jean Romanet and Prix de l'Opera.

Meon Valley Stud, fresh from toasting Anapurna's Group 1 success in the Prix de Royallieu, have a fine track record of offering stock by Dubawi at Book 1, having sold the 2,600,000gns Prince Eiji in 2017, the talented Emaraaty for the same price a year earlier and this year's Solario Stakes third Al Suhail for 1,100,000gns 12 months ago.

Lot 77

B c Dubawi - The Fugue (Dansili)
Watership Down Stud

Watership Down Stud topped last year's Book 1 with the brother to Too Darn Hot, who was knocked down to David Redvers for 3,500,000gns. The Lloyd Webbers look to have every chance of repeating the trick with another of their homebreds this year, with this colt, another by Dubawi, the first progeny of The Fugue to be offered at public auction.

One of the finest racemares of recent times, the daughter of Dansili won four Group 1s, including when beating the colts in the 2013 Irish Champion Stakes and the 2014 Prince of Wales's Stakes, in which she also saw off the mighty Treve.

The Dubawi - Dansili cross has already produced some notable talents, including Pretty Polly Stakes winner Nezwaah, the high-class Time Test and Glorious Journey, who topped the 2016 renewal of Book 1 at 2,600,000gns.

Lot 180

B c Frankel - Attraction (Efisio)
Floors Stud

With this regally-bred colt taking his turn five lots from the close of day one, bidders are going to require a bit of stamina. The youngster, bred by the late Duke of Roxburghe, is a full-brother to Elarqam, himself a 1,600,000gns Book 1 buy and winner of the Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes and third in the Juddmonte International earlier this year.

Moreover, the colt is out of the duke's dual 1,000 Guineas heroine Attraction, who has not only also produced the Group 3 winner Fountain Of Youth and the Grade 3-placed Cushion, but another seven-figure Book 1 graduate in Maydanny, who was bought by Shadwell for 1,350,000gns in 2017.
