Kingman off the mark at stud as son Calyx dazzles on debut
The two-year-old colt was green but won by five lengths
The highly anticipated debut crop of Juddmonte's brilliant miler Kingman produced its first winner when the operation's homebred colt Calyx powered five lengths clear of his eight rivals in the 6f AFT Fluorotec EBF Novice Stakes at Newmarket's July course on Saturday.
There were shades of the sire in the way that Calyx put daylight between himself and the rest of the field, as it was on the July course that Kingman - also trained by John Gosden for Khalid Abdullah - made an impressive debut himself, albeit over a furlong further.
A fourth generation Juddmonte homebred, Calyx is the fourth foal, and first winner, out of the Observatory mare Helleborine, who landed the Group 3 Prix d'Aumale at two.
Helleborine is one of five winners out of New Orchid, who also produced the Group 1-winning sprinter African Rose to Observatory.
Kingman, who stands alongside Frankel at Juddmonte's Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket, won seven of his eight starts including four Group 1 events over a mile.
Kingman kicked off his top-level four-timer in the Irish 2,000 Guineas before going on to land the St James's Palace Stakes, the Sussex Stakes at the Prix Jacques Le Marois.
The son of Invincible Spirit and Poule d'Essai des Pouliches winner Zenda is set to be represented by 113 two-year-olds in 2018. His other two runners to date, Alnasherat and Wild Hope, have both reached the frame on debut.
Other named Kingman two-year-olds to look out for include Imhotep, a half-brother to Fair Eva; Cozi Bay, a three-parts sister to Zebedee; Clerisy, a half-sister to Expert Eye; Fallen From Heaven, a half-brother to Fallen For You; Stanley Beach, a half-sister to Pearl Secret; Tempus, a half-brother to Time Test; Wild Abandon, a half-sister to Reckless Abandon; Strelka, a half-sister to Workforce; and She's Got You, a half-sister to Without Parole.
