Falmouth Stakes heroine Snow Lantern retired and booked to visit Dubawi

Snow Lantern, the winner of the Falmouth Stakes and the Keswick family's daughter of Classic winner Sky Lantern, has been retired from racing and is set to be covered by Dubawi this term.

The Frankel filly emulated her illustrious dam with top-level success in the Falmouth at Newmarket last July, and was also placed in the Coronation Stakes and Sussex Stakes for Richard Hannon, who likewise trained Sky Lantern to win the 1,000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes among four top-level victories.

The Keswicks' adviser Ed Sackville said: "She's won a Group 1 and Dubawi isn't getting any younger so we thought it was an opportune moment to cover her.

"Sky Lantern has only produced one filly to date, so that was another reason to retire her. Part of the reason for going to Dubawi is that the reverse of the cross has been very successful and so it made sense. If Sky Lantern’s two Kingman colts go on to be as successful as Snow Lantern we’ll use Kingman going forward."

Having finished second on her sole start at two, Snow Lantern shed her maiden tag on her first start at three, beating Derab at Newbury, before picking up her first black-type placing in the Michael Seely Memorial Stakes.

A fine second and third to Alcohol Free in the Coronation and Sussex Stakes came either side of a victory in the Falmouth, in which she defeated Mother Earth, Alcohol Free, Lady Bowthorpe and Saffron Beach.

The four-year-old is the third foal out of Sky Lantern, who is in foal to Frankel again and returns to the champion sire this year. She also has a yearling colt by another Banstead Manor Stud sire in Kingman.

Sky Lantern's two-year-old Kingman colt sold to Oliver St Lawrence for 625,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale last autumn, while her unraced three-year-old Galileo colt First Emperor is in training with Donnacha O'Brien.

The daughter of Red Clubs has also produced two winning sons of Dubawi in Noonday Gun and Gentile Bellini, the latter a 2,000,000gns purchase by MV Magnier from Book 1 in 2017.
