Deep Impact and Lope De Vega share in Wertheimer bounty at Deauville

There are four newcomers' races during Deauville's summer meeting that have built fine reputations for unearthing future stars and, having produced the 1-2 in the Prix de Crevecoeur at the start of the month, Wertheimer et Frere swept the two heats staged on Tuesday.

Hidaka provided a reminder, were one needed, of the near-incalculable loss to the world's elite breeders that came with the recent death of Deep Impact.

The Wertheimers have been longtime supporters of Shadai's late superstar and sent dual Listed winner Royalmania to Japan for her first cover.

As a daughter of Argentine-bred Safari Queen, Royalmania is an Elusive Quality half-sister to the brothers' Prix Saint-Alary winner Queen's Jewel.

Maxime Guyon quickly had the Andre Fabre-trained Hidaka disputing the lead of the Arqana Prix de la Reboursiere and when he asked her to go and win her race, she lowered her head and drove to the line in pleasing style.

"We're having a great run with the two-year-olds, which is very satisfying," said racing manager Pierre-Yves Bureau. "We have a policy with the mares we send to Japan because they have a long voyage to make. We send two or three each year and they tend to be mares which haven't produced the year before.

"Royalmania also has a foal by Daiwa Major. Deep Impact and other Japanese stallions have tended to work well when crossed with South American blood though it isn't always the case.

"We went to Deep Impact to try and get away a little from the Galileo and Danehill bloodlines. The Deep Impact [line] can get horses that are a little light but Hidaka is well balanced. She won very well and we'll have to look higher with her now."

Lope De Vega colt overcomes tardy start

Earlier in the afternoon the Wertheimer team might have thought the chances of scoring in the Arqana Prix de Montaigu for colts and geldings had gone in the first ten seconds as Ecrivain blew the start, leaving Guyon with a choice to make.

He chose not to give in to the situation and hurried the son of Lope De Vega after his 14 rivals, eventually finding a nice seam up the inner to get the better of a five-way battle at the line.

Trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias said: "He dwelt in the stalls and was a little lost initially when he found himself behind the others. Fortunately he [Guyon] didn't just drop his hands and accept matters but persevered. He is a nice Lope De Vega and has plenty of spirit. He takes all the best points you can from that sire so it’s encouraging."

Ecrivain is out of the Danehill Dancer mare Sapphire Pendant, herself runner-up in the Derrinstown 1,000 Guineas Trial and bought to join the Wertheimer broodmare band at Tattersalls for 480,000gns.
