Jumps breeders will have the chance to make some major additions to their broodmare bands during Tuesday's concluding session of the Arqana Breeding Stock Sale in Deauville, with Avanguardia, dam of Supreme Novices' Hurdle hero Labaik, and Star Face, who produced eight-time Grade 1 winner Douvan, due to come under the hammer.

Avanguardia (Lot 884) and Star Face (931) are being offered on behalf of Tunisian breeder Lotfi Kohli by Haras d'Haspel, and of the stud's eye-catching draft, Sandra Delmotte said: "Both mares have been with us for some years now, they're two very kind mares who are easy to deal with and have good fertility."

Both mares are offered in foal to Doctor Dino, the sire of Sharjah, Sceau Royal and La Bague Au Roi who will stand for €16,000 at Haras du Mesnil in 2020, the fee believed to be a record for a National Hunt sire.

Delmotte, whose father Jose founded the farm in the Orne region of France, added that Kohli had planned to breed a full-sibling to Labaik but had been forced to change plans late in the season.

"Both have good coverings too," she said. "Avanguardia was covered quite late as she was meant to be in foal to Montmartre. Unfortunately he is quite infertile so she wasn't in foal after multiple coverings. As we didn't want her to remain barren she was sent to Doctor Dino."

Haras d'Haspel will also offer a half-brother to Labaik (889), with Avanguardia having produced a colt by Doctor Dino in May.

"He's a very nice foal, very good-looking and has been very well stamped by his sire," reported Delmotte. "He's quite a late foal, later than many in this sale, but he's got a lot of quality."

It will be interesting to see how the market values such high-achieving stock, though prospective purchasers are unlikely to pick up a bargain of the magnitude that Kohli did, having purchased the dams of two Cheltenham Festival winners for a barely believable combined sum of €7,000.

Star Face, a 15-year-old daughter of Saint Des Saints, was picked up for just €2,000 at the Arqana February Sale in 2012 while Avanguardia, a 14-year-old Choisir mare, was bought for €5,000 at the same company's December Sale two years later.

Both were signed for on behalf of Kohli by Marc-Antoine Berghgracht and were intended be sent to Africa to be bred from before the emergence of their star offspring.

Tuesday's session of the Arqana Breeding Stock Sale begins at 11am local time (10am GMT).
