Champion miler-turned Group 1 stallion Hat Trick dies at stud in Brazil
Top juvenile Dabirsim the best of the Japanese import's progeny
Champion Japanese miler Hat Trick has died aged 19 at Haras Springfield in Brazil, the publication Turf Diario has reported.
A son of the great Sunday Silence, he was bred by Oiwake Farm and at his very best in 2005 when claiming both the Mile Championship at Kyoto and the Hong Kong Mile.
Hat Trick was to spend nearly a decade in Kentucky, firstly at Walmac Farm, and he made a swift start by siring French champion juvenile and now stallion Dabirsim.
He moved to Gainesway in 2012 breeding season and while he will not be regarded as a titan of US bloodstock, he produced the likes of Jamaica Handicap winner King David, big money-spinner Tricky Escape and Bright Thought, who blitzed the Grade 2 San Luis Rey Stakes at Santa Anita.
Hat Trick was sold to South America in 2017 and had already shuttled to Argentina, his progeny including the Grade 1 star Hat Puntano. He is reported to have died in his box shortly after covering a mare on Monday.
