'You just don't see horses go off evens for the Brocklesby and win so easily'

We’re entering that strange part of the year that I call the crossover. It’s the last knockings for jumps fans and the Flat is gearing up for a marathon season lasting from March to November.

Last week the Flat took centre stage and what did we learn? Let’s start with the obvious: Persian Force looks like a juvenile going places. You just don’t see horses go off evens for the Brocklesby and win such a traditionally competitive race so easily. He must be good.

Later on Saturday’s card Groundbreaker was impressive in the 1m2f maiden. He did a lot wrong, racing freely off the steady gallop in a first-time hood and running all over the track when clear, but it was a case of whoosh and off he went when David Probert went for him.
