Rarely will I be drawn into betting on a novice contest in Britain due to the never-ending amount of imponderables, but we are given much more information about first-time starters stateside and I'm happy to put my money where my mouth is with Idle Time in the $20,000 maiden special weight (7.18) at Tampa.
A son of Grade 1 winner Into Mischief out of a Mr Greeley mare, Idle Time is bred in the purple and connections clearly believe he has inherited his stallion's stamina as he starts his career over just further than a mile.
Hailing from the barn of Christophe Clement, who is 8-21 (38 per cent strike-rate) at Tampa this meet, Idle Time is the sole runner on the card for the trainer who has booked leading rider Samy Camacho.
Camacho would have had the choice of numerous runners in this field and the fact he has chosen this newcomer suggests plenty is expected.
Recent work backs that up with a four-furlong breeze from the gates in 49.60 seconds at Payson Park Training Centre in February looking especially promising.
Most of his work has come on the dirt and he is bred to thrive on that surface, so it's interesting he is starting out on turf. Into Mischief's progeny are generally best on dirt with half-brothers Authentic and Mischievious Alex thriving in recent months.
However, he did a nice breeze on turf last month, half-brother Sombeyay won the Canadian Turf and Clement strikes at 30 per cent with his turf newcomers.
Hopes are also pinned on Harmonic Thunder, who makes her fourth start in the $22,000 maiden claimer at Gulfstream (5.30) for trainer Saffie Joseph.
Joseph is having a cracking meet with 35 winners from 132 runners (27 per cent) and can add to his tally with this daughter of Honor Code.
Harmonic Thunder has shown decent early pace on her last two outings and remains thoroughly unexposed. While the draw in gate 11 is not ideal, there isn't much pace on her inside and she should be able to get a prominent sit. This is a marked drop in grade.
The final tip of the day is Dak Attack, who is trained by the shrewd Dale Romans, an infrequent visitor to Gulfstream.
Dak Attack has already been tried at Grade 3 and Listed level and, although he came up short on both occasions, his juvenile form and recent outings at Churchill Downs mark him down as a horse to keep on side. The drop from Grade 3 company to contest this $53,000 allowance optional claimer (8.36) is one to take note of.
