Sprinters from this stable typically improve with age so this five-year-old mare could have more to offer. Last season she ran exclusively in 6f races and a return to that distance could suit. She simply got going too late over this sharp 5f as she was last two furlongs out and half a dozen lengths off the leaders, but stormed home to be beaten only one and three-quarter lengths.

Balgair
Jonathan Portman

7th, Epsom, April 26
This race was dominated by horses who were ridden prominently –the first three were never more than a couple of lengths off the lead – and what appeared to be a favourable draw for Balgair in stall one proved to be a disadvantage. He was shuffled back in the early stages and then suffered a rough passage as he tried to progress through the field in the home straight. To his credit, he kept going and he may be more effective at a course with a stiffer finish – his only previous win was achieved at Sandown.

Afjaan
William Haggas
Won, Haydock, April 29
The first three pulled well clear in this 7f handicap won decisively by this progressive five-year-old despite a slow start. Runner-up Oh This Is Us, who was second in the Lincoln and previously won a valuable handicap at Bath, gives the form substance, so Afjaan could well follow up off his revised mark in a big handicap. The Victoria Cup is a possible target, although options over a mile are open to him too. In September he won the London Mile Handicap Final at Kempton.
