Hunters Call was favourite for the race and that must have been a hammer blow for Murphy, who has otherwise made a remarkable impact in his opening campaign.

Indeed, there can't have been many who have had as many winners in their first season starting from scratch as Murphy, who is on 42 with a couple of months to go – Dan Skelton had 27 in his first year – and looks certain to be a major force in the jumps game for years to come.
