The Punt Acca: Harry Wilson's three horse racing tips at Sandown on ITV
High Stakes (1.15 Sandown)
This four-time point scorer must have been bought with chasing in mind but he was highly tested as novice hurdler, falling in the Grade 1 Challow and pulling up in the Grade 2 Prestige Novices' at Haydock. His chasing debut can be ignored as the ground was too quick for him but he was an eyecatching third on his last start in November. He led and jumped well until he got tired over the 3m1f trip, with a mistake four from home causing him to lose momentum, but it was the trip that beat him. The drop to 2m4f on soft ground looks ideal and in-form trainer Warren Greatrex has sent out two winners, a second and two thirds from five runners since the turn of the year.
Frero Banbou (1.50 Sandown)
Venetia Williams has a few live chances on the Sandown card but the one that sticks out the most to me is course-and-distance winner Frero Banbou. He has finished second and fourth at Ascot in his two starts this season, latterly behind Wayward Lad winner Boothill, which were good runs considering his wins have come with soft in the going description. His form figures at the track read 12, which shows that the Railway fences hold no fears, and that is always a good thing when punting at the Esher venue. He is is now 1lb lower than when third in the Grand Annual at the Cheltenham Festival, and the softer conditions will suit him more than most.
Sir Ivan (3.00 Sandown)
This 13-year-old has been a common feature in this event, finishing third in the last two runnings but he is sure to run another mighty race with everything in his favour. Following a 252-day break he has put up two solid performances, firstly finishing third in a veterans' event at Aintree before filling the same position at Fontwell last time, which was a fantastic run at a trip that would have been far too sharp. His last win came in a similar event at Newbury in March 2021 and he has dropped to mark of 129, which is the lowest he has run off since December 2015. There is no doubt he is well treated and the race conditions look ideal. Age is just a number!
