The Placepot: Paul Kealy tackles day one of Ayr's Scottish National meeting
Two maidens on the card at Newbury are off-putting for Placepot purposes, so it's off to Ayr for day one of the Coral Scottish Grand National meeting.
There are some small fields, but the opener (1.00) looks a toss-up between Mrs Hyde and , and there's no need to have more than one. The older Mrs Hyde has the best form, but has been off for a while, so Stepney Causeway is the choice.
The next (1.30) is much tougher, but has been running well for an in-form yard, while has performed well in novice company and doesn't look badly treated for his first handicap.
In leg three (2.05), Lucinda Russell's has run some of his best races when the ground has been no worse than good to soft and, back in form last time, should run well, while is certainly handicapped to get off the mark over fences.
In the next (2.40), ran a fair race down in trip last time and got dropped 5lb for it. Back up in distance, she's nicely handicapped now, while has form figures of 51221 at this track and can go well too. That pair might just serve it up to the more recent winners, who look short enough in the betting.
The strong-travelling could find this track to his liking in the next (3.15), but with only six runners it's worth going with one more, and good-ground specialist is included too.
In the final leg (3.50), is a strong fancy to run well on a track he likes, while doesn't look badly in on his form with Camprond.
