The Meydan Punt: Nick Driver with three to follow on Thursday
Banker
Brundtland (4.15)
With last years 1-2-3 missing and Red Galileo seemingly out of form, this could be a penalty kick for a true Group horse in Brundtland. The selection has only had five runs but is the pick of William Buick and his form is by far the classiest in the race with two Group 2 victories. On his previous run he was fourth in the Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak with Flag Of Honour, who won the Irish St. Leger and was fourth in the Long Distance Cup, behind in fifth. He is rated 5lb better than his nearest rival, stays well and despite this being a step towards the Dubai Gold Cup, he really should be too good for them here.
Good Thing
Good Fortune (3:05)
Good Fortune beat a fair few of these last time out from a tough draw, a wide trip and arguably a distance too short on pedigree. Therefore, it would make sense to stick with the New Approach colt over a mile. The selection was being pegged back by Woven and Trolius last time, but when they came to him he seemed to find a bit more and that suggested he could possess a touch of class. He is bred to get further than a mile but proved his speed over 7f so there is no reason why the mile should not suit. He has a better draw in stall five, so if breaking well should be in a good position to make a run coming into the straight with the potential dangers Golden Jaguar, Trollius and Woven drawn wide.
Dark Horse
Earnshaw (4:50)
It is a tough card but Earnshaw could be worth a second look in the Curlin Handicap. There are plenty of question marks over his head with only one previous run on dirt to his name and he has not won since 2013. However, that win was a Group 3 and he retains every bit of class since then with his current rating of 98 his lowest ever. He has placed in eight other Listed or Group races throughout his career and surely there is a win in him at this level before he signs off. He has run some big races behind some major players this year and looks sure to be a value price. He is well drawn and could cause an upset in an open race at a very fair price.
