Most punters nowadays would nominate Richard Hannon and Mark Johnston as the trainers to focus on at Glorious Goodwood, but there is another big-name handler whose runners high on the Sussex Downs should always be given maximum respect.

Even though he has twice won the Derby, I will forever associate Luca Cumani with success at my favourite meeting of the year, partly due to some memorable big-handicap gambles landed earlier in his career with the likes of Fish ‘N’ Chips, Chinoiserie, Tidemark and Black Monday.

The 12 runners for the 1990 Tote Gold Trophy Handicap included the Reg Akehurst-trained, Alan Spence-owned Barrish, a legend at Birch Towers after landing a considerable Brighton coup which yielded sufficient funds to purchase a two-year-old Ford Scorpio.
