Royal Ascot 2019: tips from Racing Post experts for day four
Handicappers' nap
Japan (3.05 Ascot)
Earned an RPR of 118 on his first try at this trip when third in the Derby last time. That effort sets a very high benchmark and a repeat could suffice.
Sam Walker
Newmarket nap
Pondus (3.05 Ascot)
Put up an impressive performance under a 7lb penalty to win at Sandown last time and is fancied to follow up over this longer trip. James Fanshawe's hope has since moved well on Warren Hill.
David Milnes
Eyecatcher
Desirous (5.00 Ascot)
Twice runner-up to subsequent Group 3 winners at two before winning a novice contest over 7f and followed up on her return at Goodwood over a mile last month despite still looking green. She should improve again and this race looks perfect for her.
Raceform
Irish angle
Japan (3.05 Ascot)
The Derby third is difficult to oppose as he bids to give Aidan O'Brien his second win in the Group 2 event. Having had an interrupted preparation for the Dante, he finished strongly at Epsom and should have no issues with the ground.
Tony O'Hehir
Speed figures
Corgi (5.35 Ascot)
Runner-up over course and distance at this meeting last year and has been placed in some hot handicaps elsewhere. Made a pleasing reappearance and would not be winning out of turn.
Dave Edwards
Spotlight nap
Japan (3.05 Ascot)
Fourth in the Dante on reappearance and built on that when a close third in the Derby. This comes just 20 days after that hard race, but on form he's the one they have to beat.
Ben Hutton
Dark horse
Top Tug (5.35 Ascot)
Fourth and fifth in the last two runnings of this race and made a promising reappearance behind Crystal Ocean at Newbury.
Rob Sutton
Must-have stat of the day
The last ten winners of the Albany Stakes (2.30) had run no more than twice, with nine winning their latest start. 9/10 were drawn in stalls 12-17 and the only qualifier to be drawn there is Daahyeh.
