Cause Of Causes
Grand National
33-1 generally
Gordon Elliott is such a master at priming a horse for one big day that Cause Of Causes, runner-up to One For Arthur in 2017, makes huge appeal at 33-1 to go one better next spring. Form over the National fences is not quite as important as it once was, but the fact Cause Of Causes jumps them so well adds to his appeal. Blaklion’s victory in the Becher Chase obviously stamped him as a leading candidate, but the handicapper has taken notice and it did appear that lack of stamina was the biggest reason for his defeat in April.
Richard Birch

Elarqam
2,000 Guineas
16-1 generally
Everything about Elarqam suggests he'll develop into a top-class performer. Bought for seven figures as a yearling and bred in the purple, he lived up to expectations when justifying favouritism in a York novice event and a Newmarket Group 3 in September. He'll go into his three-year-old campaign with an unbeaten record and the promise of much more improvement to come. As regards his Guineas credentials, he couldn't have a better pedigree – he's by 2,000 Guineas winner Frankel out of Mark Johnston's 1,000 Guineas heroine Attraction. Elarqam, who is trained by Johnston, is a highly exciting prospect for 2018.
Steve Boow

1,000 Guineas
20-1 generally
Everything about Polydream as a two-year-old suggested speed and it would be ambitious to imagine she will stay any further than the Guineas trip in 2018. Her demolition of future Fillies’ Mile heroine Laurens at Deauville over 7f was one of the most impressive displays in Group company seen anywhere in Europe. She was unable to fully replicate that effort on softer ground on the turning mile of Chantilly in the Prix Marcel Boussac and trainer Freddy Head might be tempted by Newmarket, which he has always maintained from his riding days repays speed more than stamina in comparison to Longchamp. Polydream is not the most physically imposing among last term's leading juveniles but she has gears to spare.
