Western Miller
Fell, 2m½f novice chase, Sedgefield, Tuesday, October 3
Western Miller carried plenty of stable confidence and it may well be a matter of time before he makes amends for this fall at the fourth fence.
Charlie Longsdon’s unexposed six-year-old had travelled all the way from Chipping Norton and was very strongly fancied in the market.
A three-time winner over hurdles, he had put up an impressive performance at Stratford when scoring on his chasing debut when jumping well under a positive ride.
This drop in trip from 2m3½f wouldn’t have been ideal, but he was showing enough pace to race in second at the time of the departure.
The classy son of Westerner should soon resume winning ways, especially when back up in distance.

Perfect Thought
Second, 7f fillies’ novice stakes, Chelmsford, Thursday, October 5
Perfect Thought ran into a class act when second to Expressiy.
William Haggas’s capable juvenile ran boldly from the front from stall nine, but was ridden over two furlongs out and headed approaching the final furlong.
However, the daughter of Dawn Approach kept on with the promise of improvement, especially when upped in trip again having race over 6f on three previous starts.

Quarenta
Winner, 2m5f handicap hurdle, Warwick, Thursday, October 5
Quarenta travelled like a dream on the way to this impressive first victory over hurdles, suggesting he is capable of scoring in a higher grade.
Jonjo O’Neill’s classy five-year-old had been caught close home at Worcester in August when moving similarly impressively over 2m7f.
The French-bred gelding was always prominent here and led three out before being ridden approaching the last. He got in a little tight at the final flight but picked up well on the short run-in and, although hanging right in the flat, ran on strongly.
It might have taken eight attempts to get off the mark over hurdles, but he is clearly improving fast now.

Verbitude
Seventh, 7f nursery, Dundalk, Friday, October 6
Verbitude holds Classic entries, so it was interesting to see him make his handicap debut here off a mark of just 74.
Racing enthusiastically for three-quarters of the race, Jim Bolger’s juvenile was headed two furlongs out but plugged on gamely.
He has raced from 5f to 1m in just four races – but there could be more to come over further.

Bertog
Sixth, 7f novice stakes, Redcar, Saturday, October 7
Bertog qualified for a low handicap mark when finishing sixth on this third start.
John Mackie’s two-year-old was dropped in from stall two but raced keenly and ran up the back of his rivals and wasn’t given a hard race as the leaders had flown.
This fine son of Sepoy needs a stronger early pace and can surely progress in handicaps.

Gold Eagle
Second, 1m nursery, Wolverhampton, Saturday, October 7
Gold Eagle would surely have won with an uninterrupted passage.
Having to stop and switch around the field, she lost momentum at a crucial stage but was closing quickly on the prominently ridden winner, failing to get up by only a head with a gap back to the rest.
Gold Eagle appreciated every yard of this extra furlong and can remain competitive in similar races.
