What an amazing story the Ladbrokes St Leger threw up yesterday. I thought I knew Harbour Law well, having followed him all season long, and as a result I wouldn’t have backed him at 200-1 to win. What a training and riding performance it was from the Mongans and George Baker because I’m pretty sure it was the preparation and ride that won the Classic for Harbour Law as much as his undoubted ability.

When you have one star horse, keeping Harbour Law off the track for a couple of months and preparing him for the Leger when he had been beaten on his last two starts was seriously impressive and Baker waited until all the others had bashed seven bells out of each other before challenging.

Of course Harbour Law was helped by Idaho slipping up and Muntahaa being given one of the strangest rides I’ve seen in a Classic, but he had to be a seriously talented horse to travel into the race the way he did and, as he has had only six runs, there is surely more to come.
