Our tipsters pick out the best bets from the bookmaker specials for 2019
Racing Post experts' picks
16-1 A horse to win the US Triple Crown (Betfred)
It's 33-1 for the British Triple Crown to be won yet it's extraordinarily rare for any horse to go for it, while it's 16-1 for the US version when virtually every Kentucky Derby winner is sent down that road. This is a big price for what is essentially a double as if there isn't a shock in the Derby, the winner will be favourite for the Preakness and even shorter for the Belmont if the first two legs are in the bag. The first two legs are won fairly often and at that point you'll have plenty of trading options.
Paul Kealy
6-4 Any horse to win at Chelmsford and Royal Ascot (Betfred)
Last year alone Chelmsford offered more than £5 million in prize-money and, with more than 50 fixtures scheduled for 2019, the Essex track is expecting to offer a similar sum in the new year. For this bet only the first 23 fixtures will count before Royal Ascot in June but, with such healthy prize-money, it seems fair to assume we might see one of their winners go on to victory at the royal meeting.
Graeme Rodway
40-1 Nicky Henderson to train the 1-2-3 in the Champion Hurdle (Sky Bet)
For some reason the odds about there being a US Triple Crown winner keep increasing, despite it having actually happened twice in the last four years. The 16-1 with Betfred is a highly appealing price and I'll be putting money on it again, but it's a bit boring trotting out the same recommendation once more, and I've found another good bet at a bigger price.
Come Tuesday, March 12, the 40-1 on offer for Henderson to saddle the first three home is expected to be a highly attractive price.
Ben Hutton
14-1 John Gosden to win the 2,000 Guineas, Derby and Arc (Sky Bet)
The only domestic Classic John Gosden hasn’t won is the 2,000 Guineas, although he probably should have broken his duck with Kingman. But never mind, he has just the horse to do the job for him in 2019 with Too Darn Hot, unbeaten as a two-year-old including in the Dewhurst on his latest start.
The same horse could well then take in Epsom – he is bred to stay despite his running style, while his Arc contender needs little introduction – Enable.
Nick Watts
8-1 Altior to win the King George (Betway)
This year's King George answered plenty of questions about the three-mile division. Might Bite looks to have serious problems, Bristol De Mai is diminished away from Haydock, Kempton is not Native River's track and Politolgue doesn't quite stay. Thistlecrack was superb in second but is not getting any younger and, while the winner Clan Des Obeaux is young and improving, next year's race is crying out for a superstar and superstars don't come any bigger than Altior.
The unbeaten chaser was under serious consideration for the race this year, but I have no doubt Nicky Henderson will be aiming him at next season and there is no way he will be anywhere near 8-1 on the day.
