Our tipster targets 50-1 shock in Goodwood Cup to kick off the Glorious meeting
Lord Protector
1.50 Goodwood
1pt each-way with firms paying 7 places
There are plenty of seasoned handicappers in this line-up but I'll side with the potential of Lord Protector (20-1), who could rate higher with experience.
His progress somewhat stalled in 2021 after a strong start to his three-year-old campaign, but he bounced back from a poor reappearance by winning at Sandown last month.
That was a weaker race than this, but I was taken by the way he quickened up off a slow pace and I think a truer gallop in this will suit him. Trainer and jockey are in excellent form and I'm sweet on his chances.
Away He Goes
3.35 Goodwood
1pt each-way
Kyprios, Stradivarius and Trueshan are the standout picks in this field, but the latter is not guaranteed to get his ground and I think there is a place up for grabs for one at a bigger price like Away He Goes (50-1).
He finished second in this race 12 months ago on just his second try at two miles. His first attempt came two starts earlier in the Dubai Gold Cup, in which he was a great third behind Subjectivist, who on his next start won the Ascot Gold Cup.
Those runs represent his peak Racing Post Ratings and his return effort at Ascot is best ignored, as that trip was far too short. Back at 2m, with Jim Crowley booked, I think he has a place in him.
4.10 Goodwood
1pt each-way with bookmakers paying 5 places
Some of the juice has come out of his price, which is unfortunate, but I'm still keen on Embour (12-1), who should be just right in his bid to snap a losing sequence.
He will relish a strongly run race over the minimum trip and should be in the perfect place on his second start after wind surgery. Ray Dawson will have to do things the hard way, but provided he gets the splits I think he can steal a place.
