There was only a neck between Chic And Sexy and Take Charge Again when the pair met at Gulfstream last time. The former had a better draw and made the running, with the latter running on late to finish third. While it is true that Take Charge Again probably deserves to be a narrow favourite, the morning line has a much more significant gap between them and that makes Chic And Sexy a bet.
It has taken the selection a while to acclimatise out of maiden claimers after winning her only race at Gulfstream West in the autumn. She is more at home over this six furlongs than the five she ran over the time before last and that showed last time when she showed such early dash.
If she is able to break quickly once more and get to the front, she may take a lot of pegging back. The onus would be on Take Charge Again not making another unforced error at the start.
The maiden special weight for older horses at 8.45 looks a straight match between the Mark Casse-trained Victory Town and Celtic Brotherhood. The latter's less eyecatching connections (he is admittedly ridden by Luis Saez, one of the meet's leading jockeys) could bely his excellent claims.
Celtic Brotherhood does not have form quite as good as Victory Town, but he is much less exposed after just one run, back in March. He was second that day, finishing clear of the rest, and has since breezed nicely earlier this week to put him spot on for this.
On his debut, he was mixing it with experienced sorts and still had the raw pace to lead early on. He has once more drawn the inside stall and it is presumed Saez will try to pull a similar trick. The competition, Victory Town aside, is not up to all that much and he may be able to make the most of any early advantage.
The best bet of the day runs in the 6f claimer for older fillies and mares (9.48). Morning line favourites Worth Avenue and Memorize are drawn in the outside two boxes, while neither has the form to rival what Four K's was showing at the tail end of 2019, anyway.
That the selection, trained by Wesley Ward, is behind the aforementioned pair in the betting is probably down to an absence since January. While that is not ideal, she worked twice early in April at Gulfstream West, showing the benefit of the first spin when clocking the best time of five breezers when she last worked.
If she is back on form as that would imply, she really ought to be favourite for this. Two starts back, on her first run in a year, she was third in a much more valuable claimer than this. Her recent lightly raced profile does hint at problems, but given her track work it is best to give the benefit of the doubt and conclude that she may be best caught fresh now.
