No great surprise if Aussie rules again
There could still be a lot more to come from 4.25 Wolverhampton
This filly appears to have improved from two to three and makes considerable appeal in a race made up of mainly exposed types.
Ed McMahon's charge showed an excellent attitude to get off the mark two outings ago over this course and distance after a protracted duel with the heavily backed favourite, the pair pulling well clear. And she looked like following up for a long way at Salisbury last month only to be collared in the final strides, having appeared to hit the front plenty soon enough. She again showed an extremely willing attitude and left the impression victory would have been hers with a slightly more patient ride.
Despite being raised 4lb, Moi Aussie looks capable of rating a fair bit higher than a mark of 60 (half-brother Gold Club, who is well suited by the all-weather, is rated in the high 70s) and she is nicely drawn in one.
should appreciate the return to a faster surface 3.40 Pontefract
Things haven't worked out as expected for Michael Dods's gelding since he won his first two starts as a juvenile in 2014 for another yard and he has managed only one place from eight subsequent starts. However, he showed in a couple of starts after joining this stable last season that he still retains plenty of ability and there was enough encouragement on last month's reappearance on unsuitable ground to suggest his time might come again.
At around this time last year, Fendale went down by just half a length at Thirsk on his debut for Dods and followed that with a fine third of 19 at York, finishing behind rivals now rated 12lb and 18lb higher. With the selection having been dropped 3lb he is clearly on a handy mark if getting his act together.
Although only ninth of 12 on his return at Doncaster last month, the son of Exceed And Excel would have hated the soft ground (ran poorly on a similar surface as a juvenile) and he stuck to his task reasonably well to be beaten just over five lengths, especially as his jockey never got serious with him.
That should have set him up nicely for what looks a slightly easier contest, but it is the ground that has really come in his favour. Both his wins and last season's two good efforts came on decent going and, with conditions ideal, a return to form has to be on the cards from a favourable draw.
looks ready for the step back up in trip 4.40 Pontefract
Bar a poor effort at Musselburgh in May, when she might have been unsuited by the sharp track, Dominannie has looked fairly progressive this season and she should appreciate this stiff mile having stayed on well over shorter on her last two starts.
The daughter of Paco Boy was just touched off on easy ground at Beverley on her reappearance in April. She was given a short break after Musselburgh and has returned in fine form, twice finishing third over 7f at Carlisle. She did particularly well on the first occasion, having pulled hard after starting from the widest draw, and she finished both races well at that testing track.
Despite the presence of a couple of lightly raced runners from big yards, this 0-70 represents a drop in class for Alan Swinbank's filly after tackling rivals rated as high as 80 on her last couple of starts. The drying ground isn't an issue, she has been dropped 1lb and and her draw in stall six means she won't have to struggle to find cover early on.
The main concern is the form of the yard, which appears to have gone off the boil and has had a couple of fancied horses run poorly in the last couple of weeks.
