Aintree
5.15: Longhouse Poet
The starting point in calculations is usually last year's winner but something has been badly missing with Minella Times in his two runs this winter. Third-placed Any Second Now makes much more appeal but he too has had his mark raised significantly, so seventh-placed Discorama could prove the pick of the 2021 runners given that he had an interrupted preparation last year. All those may have to play supporting roles, however, behind two striking Irish newcomers to the race in Longhouse Poet (nap) and Escaria Ten. The former has more to prove over this trip but two notable wins over 3m1f suggested strongly that greater stamina tests would suit him very well. Delta Work looked on such good terms with himself in the Cheltenham cross-country that he too must be taken seriously. Snow Leopardess did the same in December over these unique fences and she looks the pick of the British-trained runners, among whom Fiddlerontheroof, Eclair Surf and Fortescue are others to note.
Richard Austen
Bangor
1.55: Line Of Descent
The most interesting runner is arguably the juvenile Line Of Descent (nap), who was useful on the Flat and has shaped with significant promise on both hurdling starts. He moves up in trip for today's handicap debut and could have significant untapped potential in this sphere. Vintage Fizz ran well when upped to 2m4f last month and is second choice, ahead of closely matched pair Taragrace and Maisiebella.
Chris Wilson
Newcastle
12.30: Post Chaise
Given the form of the Oliver Greenall stable, it may be prudent to side with Post Chaise (nap), who showed much improved form to win on his handicap debut at Hereford. This further step up in trip should suit and that form worked out well with the fourth and sixth winning next time. He's taken to beat fellow recent winner Songbird's Tale.
Richard Young
Thirsk
3.15: High Velocity
His winning spree ground to a halt at Wolverhampton last time but returning to 5f could see High Velocity (nap) resume his progress. In a trappy event, the main threats could be posted by Catch Cunningham and Edward Cornelius.
Paul Smith
Wolverhampton
8.00: Study The Stars
Jenny Ren has more going for her than most but Study The Stars (nap) was having his first run at 1m4f, and only his second for an in-form new yard, when keeping on well against an improved rival at Kempton and he looks the one to beat. Winning hurdler Genever Dragon is preferred of the remainder.
