Karis Teetan, so often living in the shadow of Zac Purton and Joao Moreira, gets his chance for glory in the International Jockeys’ Championship at Happy Valley.
Rides in the four selected championship races are balloted, and it is often a local with expert knowledge of the Valley who finds himself on a horse he would normally partner. Curiously, some say that is the perfect recipe for success.
The theory will be tested when Teetan rides the David Hall-trained High Rev for the first time in the Longines International Jockeys' Championship – 4th Leg (2.10).
High Rev, winner of his last two starts over a mile, is usually the mount of champion Purton, who this time finds himself aboard the Tony Cruz-trained Brave Legend.
Although High Rev has rocketed up the handicap, he is still the key horse in this race and the one with untapped potential.
Teetan’s biggest task will be to get his mount into handy position from gate ten, with a collection of the world’s best jockeys on his inside. Ryan Moore, James McDonald, Moreira and Purton are unlikely to be granting him any favours.
Teetan has an excellent chance of a double in the feature races as he also partners G Unit in the first leg of the competition (12.10).
Drawn in gate five, G Unit has drawn perfectly for the helter-skelter dash up the hill in the back straight.
It is always worth noting if one of the invited jockeys ride in a non-championship race as local trainers sometimes wait for a big name to come into town and then punt with confidence, often at well over the odds.
That looks the case when Moore partners Blastoise for David Ferraris in the Italy Handicap (1.10). He should go close from a handy draw.
