David Hayes could not have made a better start to the season when saddling a winning treble on the opening day and ushering in two future stars he believes will consolidate his stable in the top bracket in coming months.
Hayes has the bit between his teeth and his first-day impact was by design. While rivals such as John Size may run their horses into peak condition, Hayes has his string primed and ready to strike.
The trainer combined with Zac Purton to win with the exciting Nervous Witness and they join forces again at Happy Valley on Wednesday when Infinity Win bids to open his account in the Class 4 5f handicap (2.15).
Infinity Win finished second over 5f at Sha Tin on his debut in July and impressed in two recent barrier trials to beat Lucky Maryknoll, one of the three winners for Hayes on Sunday.
There is certain to be a cracking pace in Wednesday's contest, so expect Purton to slot in behind the leaders in the run to the first turn, and after that, it's luck in running.
Joao Moreira is an interesting first-time booking for Jazz Steed, who starts from a wide gate. Purton reckons he has shaken off the niggling injuries that worried him last season – he managed 125 winners despite the inconvenience – and is confident he has turned a corner. If so, stand by for him to start firing in the winners.
Piano Solo is definitely one of his most interesting mounts in the Class 4 handicap over 1m½f (1.15). This Irish import was showing signs that he was through his acclimatisation period and is now on an attractive mark.
This former Michael Halford-trained gelding is 0-10 in Hong Kong but that makes little difference now that he has come to hand. Trainer Chris So, who has good chances on today's card, is expecting Zhan Jiang Rocks to produce a little extra for Moreira, who was placed on him last season.
In the Class 3 Community Chest Cup (2.50) the prospect of a muddling pace may play into the hands of one with a good turn-of-foot such as the Richard Gibson-trained Right Honourable, who has Sunny Star as the one to beat.
Bets can be placed into Hong Kong pools with the Tote, Coral and Ladbrokes. The first race at Happy Valley on Wednesday is at 12.15pm
