Hong Kong tips: Jim McGrath with three bets for Sha Tin's Sunday card
Charity Fun
8.35 Sha Tin
2pts win
Looking Great
9.35 Sha Tin
2pts win
Trillion Win
10.10 Sha Tin
2pts win
True stayers are a rarity in Hong Kong but Charity Fun is an exception, which paves the way for him to land the Group 3 1m4f Queen Mother Memorial Cup (8.35) on his way to a bigger target later this month.
Having pointed to a lack of depth in the staying ranks, 12 runners are having a crack at this intriguing handicap, many relying on hope rather than hard evidence to back their claims at seeing out the trip.
There are no such worries for Charity Fun, who was lightly raced in Ireland (won a Fairyhouse 1m 2f maiden for Paddy Twomey) before making it three from five when winning at Happy Valley on his last start.
This four-year-old is thriving and climbing the class ladder rapidly, now racing off a mark 24lb higher than when he arrived in Hong Kong.
This is his toughest assignment so far but with a feather weight (although Alexis Badel expects to put up 1lb overweight at 8st 2lb), he will be hard to beat.
His main objective will be the Group 1 Champions and Chater Cup later in the month.
Chilean stayer Panfield finished a promising third in the Hong Kong Derby six weeks ago, and from an inside draw (3), he is likely to run well again, while Derby runner-up Russian Emperor should appreciate the expected more leisurely tempo.
Critics rounded on Karis Teetan after his Derby ride on Russian Emperor – he tracked Shadow Hero, who went out like a light on the turn – but the owner has remained loyal to the jockey, an unusual occurrence in local racing.
Yet again, there are several progressive horses ready to win again. Topping the list is the David Hayes-trained Fantastic Treasure, who will start at cramped odds but is expected to land the Class 3 7f handicap (10.45).
Two others, at slightly more generous odds, are Looking Great, confidently tipped to take the Class 3 handicap, over 1m1f (9.35), and talented Trillion Win, who has conditions to suit in the Class 3 6f sprint handicap (10.10).
In a significant jockey booking, Zac Purton is on Trillion Win for the first time. The four-year-old was only a half length behind Courier Wonder last time, which reads extremely well.
