Zac Purton can continue to run riot with eight excellent rides at Happy Valley, the best being the progressive Party Warrior for Golden Sixty's trainer Francis Lui in the Class 3 6f sprint handicap (1.15).
Purton is on a roll having racked up a five-timer at the city track on Sunday, while arch rival Joao Moreira served the first day of a six-day riding ban. This enabled the Australian to whittle down Moreira's lead to 13 in the jockeys' championship.
With Purton set to ride six favourites on the nine-race card, the magic man's buffer could be further eroded at the end of the night Yet again, the dominance of one jockey is the talking point on an attractive programme.
Party Warrior, a four-year-old New Zealand import, won over course and distance one grade lower, but as he matures, the son of Contributer is quite capable of progressing further. Significantly, Purton gets down near his lowest weight to ride him.
Drawn on the inside (1), expect him to slot in behind the leaders and enjoy the run of the race. The John Size-trained A Smile Like Yours, a model of consistency, is the danger.
It is worth noting that Purton also rides two Manfred Man-trained newcomers, who have been trialling particularly well – Lucky Sweynesse in the Class 4 6f handicap (1.45) and Joyful Mood (who has been in five trials) in another division of the race (2.15). Both are three-year-olds.
Lucky Sweynesse, purchased at a Ready-to-Run sale in New Zealand, will have the Harry Bentley-ridden Ice Legend to beat in an even race.
Ice Legend has gone up 5lb in the handicap for a course-and-distance win, but even the challenge of a wide draw (11) might not stop him, provided there is a decent pace.
Bentley also rides Invincible Missile in the finale, a Class 3 handicap (2.50) over 1m½f, but here Gorytus has the form to best them all. This former Richard Fahey-trained gelding is up 7lb for his latest win, but is still ahead of the handicapper.
He defeated Meaningful Star, Amazing One Plus and subsequent winner Zone D last time, which is a strong form line.
