On market day Deptford High Street in south-east London turns into a one-road tour of the world with a polyglot soundtrack of haggling and sales patter.

There are stalls selling everything from jewellery, clothes, rugs and trainers to fresh Ghana yams and sweatshirts bearing the image of Haile Selassie.

Behind the stalls is a blur of colourful shop fronts: butchers and fishmongers, nail salons and barbershops, Poundland and Terry’s Discount (“A little bit of everything with everyday savings”). And betting shops. Lots and lots of betting shops.
