Still one of the most amazing statistics in racing is the fact that if you had backed every single horse that Hugo Palmer had run in Britain and Ireland since he started training, you would be in profit. Quite simply Palmer has made the best start to a training career I can remember and, after a down week or so after Royal Ascot, his horses have really taken off again.

In the last couple of weeks he has produced three debutants that have put up spectacular performances. If anyone thought that the Palmer juggernaut was about to hit the buffers, they couldn’t have been more wrong.

Escobar proved hard to catch at Newbury, Best Of Days was sensationally impressive at Sandown in a good time, and on Friday night the St Leger entrant Crimean Tatar won a Newmarket maiden by a long-looking 7l.
