Count on Sir to strike at Newcastle for Barron

David Barron: trainer of Robot Boy
David Barron: trainer of Sir Runs A Lot, who has strong claims at Newcastle

Brighton

The mile handicap features plenty of track favourites and With Approval (4.20) can come out on top.

The Laura Mongan-trained five-year-old has raced here eight times, winning twice and finishing placed on three other occasions, including last time out when he was third, lacking a final change of gear on ground that was as quick as he would care for. This slightly softer surface can help him pull out a little bit more.

Kilim (5.20) has shown a liking for this track recently and looks sure to go well again in the finale.

John Berry’s filly struck on her first visit to the seaside venue in August and was unlucky to bump into a well-treated rival when returning last month. Despite taking a strong hold early on, she looked the likelier winner entering the final furlong but had to settle for minor honours. She still pulled a long way clear of the also-rans and this 4lb higher mark isn’t beyond her.

Hollie Doyle always gets a good tune out of the Stan Moore-trained Everkyllachy (2.10) and the duo can add a fourth win together in the opener.

She had plenty in hand when striking at Bath last week and a 6lb penalty wouldn’t stop her if she can produce a similar display here.

Catterick

The David O’Meara-trained Short Work (3.35) was beaten two and three-quarter lengths by Dark Intention at York two starts back, but that was over 7f and two recent efforts over this furlong-shorter trip have been among the best of his life.

He made all at Carlisle in August and was never headed at Redcar last time out, crossing the line three lengths clear.

He can defy this 7lb higher mark if producing a similar display.

Leicester

Desperados Destiny (5.00) has been finding his feet since joining Michael Dods and can finally make the breakthough in this 6f handicap.

The three-year-old beat only one rival in his first three starts for his new yard, but his last two efforts have been much better, especially a second at Carlisle last time out under Callum Rodriguez.

The young jockey retains the ride and the duo wouldn’t need much more to go one better.

Newcastle

Sir Runs A Lot (5.55) failed to strike in seven races elsewhere, but new blinkers and the switch to this surface did the trick last time out.

David Barron’s charge hit the front two furlongs from home and did just enough to hang on.

He seemed to idle in front and probably had a bit more to offer if required, so it would be no surprise to see jockey Sam James delay his challenge slightly longer this time. In that case he should beat Frozon.
