Byrnes can get back on winning trail with Not For You
Towards the end of a quiet month for his stable Charles Byrnes can pick up the winning thread again with Not For You in Clonmel's Tickincor Handicap Chase (4.35).
After hitting the headlines with a spectacular treble at Roscommon in early August, the trainer has failed to add to his tally since the progressive Black Warrior won at Cork late last month. The gamble landed at Roscommon was a rare case in the jumping game of everything falling into place. In contrast, the form-profile of Not For You illustrates the more common tendency of plans to go awry.
Quite lightly-raced since a maiden hurdle win at Wexford in 2013, the eight-year-old proved costly to supporters when failing to justify favouritism in three outings in Britain last season. Returning from a break at Tipperary in July he ran quite creditably until falling at the second-last. Since then he has provided three more instances of beaten favouritism. At Kilbeggan he did not seem to get the 3m1f trip. A fortnight later at Killarney he was beginning to get into contention when carried out at the third-last. For his most recent start he was dropped in trip in a 2m1f amateur riders' event at Listowel and ran on too late in the day to pose a serious challenge to Rockshandy whose rider had controlled matters well from the front. Today's opposition is weak enough to suggest he can begin to claw back losses.
