John Gosden’s BOLD REASON didn’t look anything special in four runs on turf in the second half of this year and didn’t appear to be progressing, but the switch to Tapeta and the application of blinkers did the trick as he ran out a convincing winner of the 1m nursery at Newcastle last Wednesday.

The time was good, much faster than the fillies’ maiden later on the card and just 0.26 seconds slower than the 0-75 handicap for older horses, so perhaps only now is the colt beginning to live up to his breeding.
