This round-barrelled colt looked in decent order and had taken a big step forward from his win 18 days earlier. As the race developed, he moved into contention looking full of running, but once he hit the rising ground his final effort petered out. A return to a mile may well see him get back to winning ways.

Playful Sound didn’t take the eye in the paddock and got quite warm before the race, but to her credit she battled on gamely having been well placed throughout by William Buick in a slowly run race. Her only blemish came on her final run of last year when she was over the top and she deserves a crack at a Listed race.

The well-made Central Square looked very fit and was accompanied by two handlers, but the way he performed suggests he could be returning to his old form.
