Society Rock now long odds-on to be leading first-season sire

RaceBets cut sire to 1-2 to post the most winners this Flat season

Society Rock is now a 1-2 chance with RaceBets to be leading first-season sire by number of winners in Britain and Ireland during the turf season, having opened up at 7-1 at the start of the year.

The late Tally-Ho Stud resident has posted 15 winners in Britain and Ireland up to Thursday and has been in the headlines of late, with one son, Unfortunately, having landed the Prix Morny at Deauville on Sunday and another, Tangled, having taken the valuable Goffs Premier Yearling Stakes at York on Thursday.

Each year RaceBets has given industry members a £50 charity bet for the competition and the firm looks to face a payout this year, with Tom Goff and Oliver St Lawrence having plumped for Society Rock in the Racing Post back in March.

Karl Burke, trainer of Unfortunately, split his stakes between Society Rock and Havana Gold - the sire of Havana Grey, another in his stables who finished second in the Prix Morny.

The freshman sire competition is no foregone conclusion, though, with Havana Gold on 12 and Swiss Spirit and Red Jazz each on 11.

Camelot and Dawn Approach, the 9-4 and 100-30 market leaders when the betting opened in March, have a lot of legwork to do as they have supplied only one and three winners respectively.

RaceBets leading first-season sire by number of winners:
1-2 (from 7) Society Rock, 15-8 (from 14) Havana Gold, 10 Red Jazz, Swiss Spirit, 20 Dawn Approach, Declaration Of War, Epaulette, 22 Camelot, 25 Lethal Force, 40 Intello, 50 Farhh, 66 Most Improved. (Up to November 5, 2017)
