Sustained demand sees record turnover at Park Paddocks

The curtain came down on another record-breaking renewal of the Tattersalls October Sale in Newmarket yesterday, one which smashed the record marks set only 12 months ago.

Sustained demand across Books 1 to 3 for those horses deemed commercial helped push turnover for the overall sale to a record 158,151,450gns, 19 per cent above the previous high of 132,705,800gns set last year. There were also a record number of 17 seven-figures yearlings sold during Book 1, led by the 4,000,000gns Galileo filly out of Dank who was bought by Godolphin.

"There have been records broken, and extraordinary highlights over the past two weeks of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale," said Tattersalls' chairman Edmond Mahony, "but it is appropriate at this point to express our gratitude to the huge number of people who have all made a contribution to Europe's premier yearling sale.

"There is an awful lot of hard work and dedication which goes into producing yearlings for sale at any level of the market and it is a source of pride that so many breeders from throughout Britain, Ireland and further afield, make the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale their preferred choice. The quality of the stock offered at any sale is the key to attracting the buyers and to have seen so many new faces suggests not only that the global appetite for quality European bloodstock remains strong, but that the buyers recognise the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale as the premier source of Europe's finest yearlings."

Half to Peggy's Angel to Quinn

Yesterday's single morning session was a muted affair but there were still seven yearlings who realised 25,000gns or more led by a filly from the first crop of Garswood who is set to join Mick Quinn after selling for 48,000gns.

Sold by Mickley Stud on behalf of Dalwhinnie Bloodstock, the filly is a half-sister to Jo Hughes' smart dual-winning two-year-old Peggy's Angel and the second living foal out of her dam, the winning Dark Angel mare Dora's Angel.

"She's for Kenny Bruce," said Quinn. "He's been a great supporter of mine and he wanted a nice filly.

"She's a strong filly who should be out early - perhaps she could be one for next year's Craven meeting. And she's a half-sister to a good filly. I watched Peggy's Angel win at Chester, where she got into a bit of trouble and still won. If she were to win a stakes race, this filly could end up looking a bargain."

Pinhook score for Mount Eaton

An Archipenko colt turned a fine profit for Mount Eaton Stud as the session entered its final minutes, selling for 35,000gns to Jeremy Brummitt. The colt, who is a half-brother to three winners and a grandson of Listed winner Sundrenched, was bought through George Mullins for just 7,000gns as a foal.

"He's for David Lanigan," said Brummitt. "He trains Kasperenko, another Archipenko who we bought for 30,000gns and is now rated 94.

"I've been very lucky with the sire - every one I've bought by him has been above average."

No rest for breeze-up buyers

The breeze-up buyers were again out in force, accounting for two of the day's dearest lots led by a sharp looking Kodiac colt sold by The Castlebridge Consignment for 37,000gns.

The colt is set return to auction next spring under the banner of Knockanglass Stables after Anthony Bromley of Highflyer Bloodstock, bidding on behalf of Thomond O'Mara, got the better of fellow pinhooker Willie Browne.

"He's a grand horse out of a fast mare," said Bromley, "and I was surprised to find him here on the Saturday morning. He's a real powerhouse, a two-year-old type who should do the job."

Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock, the colt is the first foal out of three-time two-year-old Blockade, who ran second in the 2013 Rockwell Stakes for James Tate.

Browne gained swift recompense when landing a Bated Breath colt from Rosyground Stud for 26,000gns under the name Jamie B Bloodstock.

"I really liked the Kodiac colt but this lad is very nice too," said Browne. "He'll come back somewhere to sell next year. He has a great walk on him and he's by a stallion who is easy to sell - he's come good the past couple of months."

The colt is out of the winning juvenile Border Minstral, a half-sister to Cherry Hinton Stakes winner Please Sing who is the dam of five winners from as many foals to race.

Last Cape Cross yearlings popular

The final yearling to pass through the ring from the last crop of the late Cape Cross also found favour, selling for 30,000gns to Sommersby. Bred by Godolphin, she boasts a fine page as the first foal of a sister to Prix Ganay winner Cutlass Bay.

Andrew Balding, meanwhile, is set to train a Fast Company half-brother to recent Chelmsford City winner Harlequin Storm after signing at 27,000gns for the colt with the BBA Ireland.

"He was my pick of the sale - just a nice solid type of a horse with a pedigree update," said the BBA Ireland's Richard Fitzsimons of the colt, who was bred and sold by Rathasker Stud.
