Surrounding provides Lilbourne Lad with rare Group victory in Ireland
Stallion moved from Rathbarry to Turkey after five seasons
Surrounding gave Lilbourne Lad his first European Group winner with a characteristically gutsy performance in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Brownstown Stakes at Fairyhouse.
It is fair to say the son of Acclamation has not been a resounding hit as a stallion, standing for five years at Rathbarry Stud until 2016 before a move to Turkey, where he remains active at the TJK Izmit Stud.
When trained by Richard Hannon, Lilbourne Lad raced only for his juvenile season, winning three of his eight starts including the Group 2 Railway Stakes, and chasing home Crusade in the Middle Park.

Although he made an early impression with his first two-year-olds in 2015, quite a few of his offspring ended up running around the sport’s nether regions.
His maiden Group winner from stud came in early 2018 in Hong Kong by Dinozzo, who took the Centenary Vase for John Size and has remained competitive in high level events this season over around a mile.
Surrounding, though, could well end up as Lilbourne Lad’s best progeny remaining on this continent, as she has never been better than at six years of age.
Trained by Mick Halford and a homebred for Peter Newell out of his Doubletour mare Roundabout Girl, she has been a model of consistency, winning a Listed race at Dundalk last winter and scoring again at that level at Naas in mid-May.
