Sistercharlie shines a light on under-appreciated Danetime

By a quirk of fate, it can sometimes seem as if a stallion’s death or export is one of the most efficient routes to ensure greater success and popularity. The most striking example of this era has to be Scat Daddy, Justify’s sire who died aged 11 in 2015. Scat Daddy was flying up the ladder at the time of his death but even so, it’s unlikely that many expected him to soar to such current heights.

A decade ago, we were lamenting the loss of Danetime, then in the limelight as the sire of Bushranger and Myboycharlie. Danetime had been a hard-knocking sprinter for Michael Tabor and Neville Callaghan, a horse well remembered for landing that almighty gamble in the 1997 Stewards’ Cup.

There was more to Danetime, however, as he went on to run placed in the Haydock Sprint and July Cups. Even so, he failed to secure that important stakes race win and thus it was at a fee of Ir£3,000 that the son of Danehill began his stud career in 1999.
