Regally bred Baratti makes winning debut for Fabre despite saddle slip

The son of Frankel can count Byword, Proviso and Finche among his siblings

The career of Juddmonte's brilliant broodmare Binche has another chapter after the taking debut win of her son, Baratti, for Andre Fabre and Pierre-Charles Boudot at Chantilly on Monday.

Baratti - a homebred son of Frankel and sibling of top-class performers Byword, Proviso and Finche - got off the mark in the 1m2f maiden despite a significant saddle slip which appeared to begin to take effect as Boudot asked questions early in the straight. He came home three-quarters of a length ahead of Soldier Hollow colt Cosmas.

The winning rider said: "He finished off well and must have had plenty in the tank because the saddle slipped backwards. He was a little cold around the turn, going past the Chateau and into the straight but when I began to get after him he picked up and showed a good turn of foot in the last 300 meters.

"I think he is a horse who can progress plenty. He doesn't show too much in the mornings and does only what you ask of him, while he has a great temperament and is obviously very well-bred. I like a horse like him who might come to the fore in the spring and then is able to make up for lost time just through their class."

The three-year-old, who holds entries for the Prix du Jockey Club and Grand Prix de Paris, is a full-brother to Finche, winner of the Prix Eugene Adam and Prix de Reux for Fabre before switching to Chris Waller's yard in Australia.

A similarly imposing white-faced chestnut to Baratti, Finche landed the Kingston Town Stakes and has been placed in the last two runnings of the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes. He was also fourth behind Cross Counter in the 2018 Melbourne Cup.

Baratti is the last known foal of Binche, whose main claims to fame came through the exploits of her two top-level winning offspring in Byword and Proviso.

Byword, a son of Peintre Celebre, was unraced at two but struck at Listed level for Fabre at three before success in the Prince of Wales's Stakes and Prix Du Muguet the following season.

Having also run the brilliant Goldikova close in that year's Prix D'Ispahan, Byword was then third behind Rip Van Winkle in the 2011 Juddmonte International, defeated Cirrus Des Aigles that October in the Prix Dollar and retired for a stud career in South Africa.

The trio's Dansili half-sister, Proviso, proved equally prolific with a plethora of stakes wins to her name with Grade 1s including the Diana and First Lady Stakes.

Having began her career with Fabre, she was a French Group 3 winner and third behind Goldikova in the Prix Rothschild before transferring to the late Bobby Frankel and then Bill Mott in America.

Binche herself ran twice for John Gosden and can count the multiple stakes-winning Binary File, a son of Nureyev, among her siblings. By Woodman, she is out of Fabre's Listed-winning and Group 3-placed Rainbow Quest mare Binary, a relation to three black-type performers.

It was a good afternoon for Frankel who was also represented by the unbeaten Big Five - a half-brother to Classic winner Flotilla - landing the Listed Prix Right Royal at Chantilly, while the Shadwell-owned Mostahdaf made it two from two in a conditions contest at Kempton.
