WinStar initiates talks to repatriate Take Charge Indy from Korea

Negotiations to repatriate in-form sire Take Charge Indy to the US are under way, according to a report in Bloodhorse.

WinStar Farm sold the nine-year-old son of A.P. Indy to stand on behalf of the Korea Racing Authority in 2016, after he had stood at the Kentucky operation for three seasons.

Take Charge Indy has made the stud regret that decision, as he is currently the leading sophomore sire in North America, having supplied last weekend's Grade 2 Louisiana Derby winner Noble Indy, Maddie May Stakes scorer Split Time and Sunland Park Oaks third Charge Back.

He is also responsible for last month's Grade 3 Forward Gal Stakes winner Take Charge Paula and Listed Suncoast Stakes winner C S Incharge.

The deal to sell Take Charge Indy to Korea included a clause that allowed WinStar to buy the horse back, and the organisation's CEO Elliott Walden told Bloodhorse: “We made a mistake to sell him, but if you were to wait to see how everything plays out, then that is the wrong decision most of the time.

"WinStar is in the business of making deals. Kenny Troutt [the owner of WinStar] loves the business and loves the horses, but sometimes you have to make decisions to keep the farm sustainable over the long term."

Take Charge Indy is a half-brother to dual Grade 1 hero Will Take Charge, who stands at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky, out of champion Take Charge Lady.

He covered 145 and 151 mares at a fee of $20,000 in his first two seasons at WinStar and a book of 103 in his third and last season in Kentucky at a price of $17,500.
