Hugo Lascelles' Lofts Hall Stud strikes it rich at Newmarket

Hugo Lascelles will have plenty of reason to celebrate after his Lofts Hall Stud in Essex bred two new Pattern winners in as many days at this week's Newmarket Cambridgeshire meeting.

"It's great for a stud like ours to breed two Group winners in two days at the Cambridgeshire meeting," said a delighted Lascelles. "We're very lucky indeed."

Arctic Sound - bred together with Ben Sangster - got the ball rolling when winning the 7f Group 3 Tattersalls Stakes for juvenile colts and geldings on Thursday.

The two-year-old Poet's Voice colt, trained by Mark Johnston and ridden by Silvestre de Sousa, raced in the colours of Saeed Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi. He was purchased by Johnston from Lofts Hall for 36,000gns at Book 3 last year.

Lofts Hall homebred Highgarden then made her Group breakthrough in the Group 3 Princess Royal Nayef Stakes over 12 furlongs for fillies and mares on Friday.

The John Gosden-trained filly was ridden by Frankie Dettori in the colours of Lascelles and part-breeder Mrs CR Philipson.

Interestingly, the runner-up Mrs Sippy, a daughter of Blame owned by St Albans Bloodstock, was also reared at Lofts Hall, where she shared the same paddock as the winner.

What's more, both Arctic Sound and Highgarden have siblings destined for Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

Arctic Sound, the best performer on Racing Post Ratings out of the Sangster family's Listed-winning sprinter Polar Circle, has a Bated Breath half-sister listed as lot 594, while Highgarden has a half-brother by first-crop sire Free Eagle catalogued as lot 639.

"The Bated Breath is an extremely nice filly and the Free Eagle is a very nice colt," said Lascelles, who was also involved in breeding star performers Power and Curvy out of Frappe. "They are a pair of genuinely nice horses."

Arctic Sound is one of three winners from as many runners out of the Royal Academy mare Polar Circle, a sister to 7f Listed winner Fokine and half-sister to French Group 2 winner and Coronation Stakes runner-up Ocean Ridge.

Highgarden, meanwhile, is out of the winning Green Desert mare Regalline, a half-sister to Classic Trial winner and Shade Oak Stud sire Recharge, out of champion older mare Rebelline.

Both yearlings are sure to warrant plenty of extra attention following the on-track exploits of their siblings this week.
