Book 1 updates keep on coming as Kick On wins hot Newmarket maiden

Kick On claimed the opening mile maiden at Newmarket's three-day meeting on Thursday, providing yet another update to Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

The John Gosden-trained colt also provided his sire, Invincible Spirit's son Charm Spirit, with a 24th individual first crop winner.

Carrying the colours of Qatar Racing on his second career start, Kick On quickly secured a favourable position towards the rail and grabbed the lead. Travelling impressively, he had the race at his mercy entering the dip and handled it well to score by two and a half lengths from his stablemate Humanitarian, a son of Noble Mission.

"He ran a nice race at the July Meeting and then he had a foot abscess and had to miss a bit of time," said Gosden. "I’m delighted with him today, he’ll improve for a step up to a mile and may get a little further.

"I’ll speak to the owners and see what they want to do. We’ve still got the whole of October and it’s a long time until April so I’m not afraid of having a go with him. He’s certainly going the right way."

It was a fine performance by Kick On over the 2,000 Guineas trip, a race in which his father finished fifth in 2014's red-hot renewal.

That year's Classic also included Kingman, another son of Invincible Spirit, who finished second and, coincidentally, the Banstead Manor sire is responsible for Kick On's three-parts brother, who is catalogued as lot 487 at Tattersalls next month.

The pair are out of Marika, a daughter of Marju, who was a Listed winner herself and has produced six winners prior to Kick On, including the two-time Listed winner Sabratah.

Charm Spirit, meanwhile, who stood for a fee of €20,000 at Haras de Bonneval earlier this year, has been well represented by his first northern hemisphere crop of racing age.

That crop was conceived at Tweenhills Stud in 2015 for a £25,000 fee, with the Group 3 Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes winner Yourtimeisnow and Group 2 placegetter Charming Kid among the best from it so far.

Charm Spirit shuttles to Windsor Park Stud in New Zealand and he has had one runner in the southern hemisphere to date from a debut crop of 90 foals.

Kingman too has had a fine start to life as a stallion, with Calyx and Sangarius among some of the most impressive juveniles seen this year.

That fact, coupled with this latest update, represents good news for next month's yearling, who is consigned by Keith Harte.
